I would like to thank dml2912 on the Dell Community forums.  I don’t know who you are, but your post solved a problem for me on my Dell D830 laptop that has nagged me since I got it over a year ago – stuttering audio.  It was a simple fix, but one that a dozen calls to Dell couldn’t solve.
